ST. COLUMBAN'S COLLEGE STEPS UP FOR RUBEN

Mukuru was recently declared a Special Planning Area (SPA) to allow for improvement of the living settlements in the area. One of the key challenges in the slums is the drainage problem, which has not only been a problem to the community especially during the rainy season but also a huge threat to us here at the Ruben Centre.
The drainage issues have been contributed by the poor planning, poor drainage systems which are occasionally blocked when people build on the way of the drainage.
Over the years, we have had serious cases of flooding in the slum as well as various departments at Ruben including the Human Development and Skills Training Program, Ruben Kitchen, the baby day care unit and the Ruben Primary school field which face the wrath of the poor drainage system running just next to the named departments. During the rainy season, they are usually forced to stop all activities and do a thorough clean up often dragging out the huge heaps of mad left behind by the sewage.
The school field is usually not spared by the floods as it often serves as the draining point for the waters and a lake is usually quickly formed. The school children, now over 2800 have no place to play with the mischievous ones often opting to play in the deep waters. The floods have always posed health hazards to the children who risk contracting Cholera and diseases brought about by getting into contact with contaminated water.
Our Head Teacher Mrs. Scholastica Opiyo was privileged to attend the Education Beyond Borders Workshop in Mumbai, India along with other colleagues from Christian Brother’s projects across the World. Through Networking with different people she was able to establish a good relationship with Principal Ann Rebgetz Principal St. Collumban’s College –Caboolture.
The St. Columbans college Australia is a Catholic educational institution that thrives on a vision to be a Christian community of faith, walking in the footsteps of St Columbans and blessed Edmund Rice that understands leadership as service; forgiveness as strength; equality and justice as paramount; compassion and outreach to the marginalized; education as a source of freedom and love as our guiding light.
Through their mission which endeavor’s to support and create partnerships with disadvantaged groups, outreach to the needy in the spirit of charism of Edmund Rice, the principal supported Ruben Primary School to renovate the school field after the head teacher shared the challenges that was facing the children during the rainy season.
The school field and the assembly ground have been renovated through the support of Anne. The field was quite low and had to be lifted three feet up by filling in with several lorries of soil. The field has also been fitted with drains to collect water when it rains. The school ground has also been renovated and is in good condition. The Human Development and Skills Training Program were lifted recently through a donation. However, the baby day care unit, which caters for children between six months and four years, continues to face challenges when it rains.
We send our sincere heartfelt gratitude to the St. Columbians College Australia family and most especially to Principal Ann Rebgetz for donating towards the renovation of the school field. The children are happy and enjoying the well carpeted field.Thank you for stepping up for Ruben Centre.
