Monthly Centre Meeting: Ruben Centre’s Path Forward

On May 16th, 2024, Ruben Centre convened its monthly center meeting under the leadership of Director Br. Frank O'Shea. The meeting brought together nineteen staff leaders representing various projects, including Health, Education, Advocacy and Networking, Social Economic Empowerment Through Education, and Organizational Capacity. The session began with a review of the minutes from the previous March meeting. The meeting then transitioned into a moment of prayer and reflection led by Brother Frank, centered on the Ruben Centre's framework and inspired by Edmund Rice’s philosophy, “The Good Seed Will Grow.” Brother Frank printed this reflection for members to read and commit to memory, emphasizing key aspects such as the vision and mission, professional practices, and sustainable economic development. This reflection aimed to reinforce professionalism and clarity among the staff.

Tony, our MEAL officer, provided an update on the 2024 Quarter Report, which is still being compiled. He commended the finance, communications, and operations teams for their outstanding work in contributing key results. He also highlighted ongoing work on a new reporting structure and the automation of data collection. Festus from finance extended gratitude to ERFA for their support, which had ensured the stability of Ruben Centre through the first quarter. Program Manager Veronica requested all project coordinators to postpone their leave until after August to ensure the report's timely completion.

The HR department announced the addition of several new team members: a new nurse, a new driver, and new interns in the Communications and Radio departments. Sister Angelica was also re-introduced as the new school counsellor. Currently, the payroll includes 109 contracted staff members. HR reminded all employees to schedule their leave days before December, with a maximum of five days allowed per person.

Brother Frank provided updates on the Ruben Trust, emphasizing the need for a proper succession plan. He also announced that Ruben Centre is now a certified trust with five trustees, with plans to add two more.

Festus reported on the Annual Audit, noting generally positive feedback but highlighting some areas needing improvement, particularly in the health and communication departments regarding consent forms. He mentioned ongoing discussions with the auditors to address these issues and noted that the application for the 2025 ERFA was in progress, with efforts to meet the submission deadline.

Key dates and upcoming events were discussed. The education sector noted that the headteacher and senior teacher Madam Opiyo and Ms. Kibaya would be leaving Ruben Centre on June 8th after many years of service. Operations Manager Mr. Albanous, finalized the new location for the relocation of the HDSTP program, set to move on June 1st. The communications department announced the upcoming Day of the African Child event on June 16th while the Ruben FM announced their tournament that will commence on June 10th, which will include football clinics as directed by sponsors.

Project reports highlighted various successes and future plans. The Education department announced new student enrollments and the appointments of a new Deputy Head Teacher, Madam Lenah. The new ECD teacher was introduced to the members. Gratitude was extended to HDSTP for their support in providing uniforms, educational materials, and counseling to new students affected by recent demolitions and floods. Belinda from the Health Department reported that the recent lab assessment recommended accreditation for the Ruben Centre lab, thanks to the efforts of Dickson Ochieng’ and other lab staff. The maternity team took pride in successfully delivering a baby using the Egyptian method, avoiding external referrals. Our library received two boxes of tablets, with two more expected, totaling 160 tablets. Victor provided an exceptional report for GIZ, and Elizabeth from HDSTP expressed excitement about moving to a new location and expanding their courses. Tony

In response to recent floods that have been affecting the country and community at large, Brother Frank announced a donation from AIDN for flood relief. This followed their visit earlier that day. The Communications department highlighted upcoming visits from more AIDN members and potential donors, with some volunteers staying at the South B apartment in the next quarter.

Overall, the meeting was successful in assessing progress and aligning future efforts to enhance Ruben Centre's impact on the community. The dedication and commitment of all staff members were acknowledged, and the meeting concluded at 4:30 pm. Together, the team at Ruben Centre continues to strive for excellence and positive transformation in the lives of those they serve.
