A Special Valentine's Day
In the spirit of celebrating love and health, Ruben Health Centre hosted a special Valentine's Day HIV testing outreach event, guided by the theme "Follow your heart, but take your brain with you." This program aimed to raise awareness about HIV prevention and responsible sexual behavior, particularly among teenagers, couples, and marginalized men. Imagine a teenager, bombarded with misinformation, finally finding a haven to ask questions and receive accurate information about HIV. Thanks to this outreach, teenagers like them discovered a space where harmful myths were dispelled, empowering them to take control of their health. This is especially crucial considering one in four new HIV infections occurs among young people aged 15-24 (Source: World Health Organization).
In addition to this, healthcare barriers often restrict marginalized men's access to essential services. Our outreach created a welcoming environment where these men received testing and education, challenging the stigma surrounding HIV and promoting inclusivity. Early diagnosis and treatment are critical, as 38 million people globally are living with HIV (Source: UNAIDS). This outreach served as a bridge for individuals who might otherwise lack access to vital resources.
At Ruben Health Centre, we believe that promoting both love and wellness is essential for a thriving community. Our dedicated team of healthcare workers surpassed the target of 200 individuals, reaching 210 individuals with crucial HIV testing and education, compared to the doctor's usual daily average of 15 clients at the outpatient department. Of the targeted 50 couples, 16 couples participated in testing together, fostering open communication and informed decision-making within their relationships. Over 90 men, often facing healthcare barriers, received testing and education, challenging the stigma surrounding HIV and promoting inclusivity. Additionally, over 1,000 condoms were distributed, and 10 individuals enrolled in PrEP use, demonstrating a commitment to preventing new infections.
Ruben Centre would like to express its sincere gratitude to all partners who made this event a success. Kiki Flowers and Ann Decors provided beautiful roses to all clients who got tested. Africa Youth Trust offered snacks for the teens who participated, creating a welcoming and comfortable atmosphere. Special thanks go to the Ruben Centre administration for providing support to our staff, ensuring they were prepared and well-equipped for the event. We also extend our gratitude to Youth Ventures for availing counselors and the Government of Kenya for providing test kits, drugs, and condoms.
