A Story of Hope
In the heart of Mukuru, where hope and resilience thrive, Judy Wanjiku Muthoni, a 39-year-old mother, found herself facing one of the most challenging moments of her life. Expecting her third child, a baby girl, she had been attending antenatal clinics at a hospital in Umoja, Nairobi. However, her journey to motherhood took an unexpected turn when doctors informed her that she would need a cesarean section due to complications.
Nurses Ruth and Melvis made Judy's delivery journey unforgettable.
“I was shocked and felt helpless,” Judy recalls. Determined to explore other options, she sought second opinions, visiting Mama Lucy Hospital. To her dismay, she was told the same thing—cesarean section was the only way. Feeling uncertain and overwhelmed, Judy turned to her mother for advice. “Go to Ruben Health Centre,” her mother urged. Trusting her mother’s wisdom, Judy arrived at Ruben Health Centre’s maternity unit on the morning of March 16, 2025. At 11 a.m., she walked in, unsure of what lay ahead. But what happened next was nothing short of a miracle.
Within an hour, against all odds, Judy delivered her baby naturally. With tears of gratitude in her eyes, she praises the team at Ruben Health Centre. “I can’t believe it! The nurses encouraged me, and Nurse Melvis gave me the morale I needed. She told me, ‘You are strong, and you can make it.’ And I did.” This was Judy’s first experience at Ruben Health Centre, as she had delivered her first two children elsewhere. Now, after experiencing the compassionate and high-quality care at Ruben, she is certain she will return. “I will definitely come back here if I have another baby. The care I received was incredible.”
Judy also expresses her appreciation for the exceptional care at the facility. “From the cleanliness of the maternity unit to the dedication of the staff, everything was beyond my expectations. Who would have thought that in a slum, you would find such a world-class maternity unit?” She extends special thanks to Brother Frank O’Shea, the director of Ruben Centre, for his unwavering support of mothers in the community. “His dedication is evident in the quality of care provided here, and in his daily visits and chats to his team and their mothers; and knowing there’s an ambulance ready 24 hours a day—it gives us mothers peace of mind.”
Judy’s story is not just about her; it is a testament to the life-changing impact of Ruben Health Centre. Every day, mothers walk into our facility with uncertainty but leave with joy, knowing they received the best care possible.
At Ruben Health Centre, we do more than deliver babies—we deliver hope. For every mother who feels like she has no options, we say, ‘There is always hope.’
