A Journey of Hope: Reflections from Our Second Centre Meeting

The second Centre Meeting of the year brought together staff from all departments to discuss updates and reflect on our collective vision. The Director led a discussion on Pilgrims of Hope, a theme tied to the Catholic logo for our 25-year celebration. As we approach this milestone on 1st March 2025, the significance of our journey was highlighted.

The Director posed a question: Are we Pilgrims of Hope at Ruben Centre? The resounding response was yes. This unity reinforced our commitment to growth, sustainability, and the empowerment of the Mukuru community. Concerns such as potential withdrawal of funds and a decline in organizational culture were also voiced. The consensus was clear: we must work together—because We are Ruben!A key highlight was a preview of an upcoming podcast video capturing a significant historical moment—the meeting of the Christian Brothers and Sr. Mary Killeen. This powerful story reminded everyone of the deep-rooted commitment that has shaped Ruben Centre.

With the 25-Year Jubilee Celebration drawing closer, the IT Coordinator, who is part of the organizing committee, outlined what to expect on 1st March 2025. Staff were reminded of their role as participants and community role models.The Jubilee is more than a milestone; it is a time of renewal, restoration, and reflection. Inspired by biblical traditions, it symbolizes a fresh start and reaffirms our commitment to serving the Mukuru community.

The meeting also provided key departmental updates. The Human Resources department, led by Mr. Chrescent Embembe, introduced updates to the HR manual, including the addition of an Operations Manager role and a governance shift where the Board of Trustees assumes leadership responsibilities. The organization reaffirmed its commitment to inclusivity, ensuring a supportive work environment. Ruben Centre now has 124 staff on payroll, with three additional clinic staff, including one volunteer.

The Programs Department, led by Ms. Veronica Mukati, introduced new activity templates for report writing to improve documentation. She also initiated weekly one-on-one updates with project leaders to enhance communication and efficiency. An exciting development is the ongoing discussion with Save the Children for a potential partnership.In the Operations Department, Mr. Albonous provided a brief but crucial update on revised healthcare procedures to improve service delivery.

The Finance Department, represented by Mr. Festus Mwaniki and Mr. Bernard Kalola, discussed activity projections in collaboration with HR and Operations. An update was shared about TMG, a key partner whose contract ends in April, with negotiations underway. Preparations for the 2024 audit are also in progress.Technology and education were major discussion points. Mr. Thomas Lemba, from the IT Department, introduced an initiative to launch a training library. This program will support adult learners and teachers, with the first sessions planned for the upcoming week for both adult students and mothers starting businesses.Health services saw notable developments. Ms. Belinda Kamundi, from the Health Department, shared insights from Fiona’s visit from Edmund Rice Development, which strengthened our initiatives. She also announced the acquisition of a new Electrolyte Machine to enhance emergency laboratory services.

From a holistic perspective, Sr. Angelica from the Counseling Desk announced the launch of new catechism classes at the school, integrating spiritual growth into community-building efforts.Madam Elizabeth Wanjiku from the Human Development & Skills Training Centre reported 70 students enrolled, showing increased interest in skill development. Soon, Ruben Centre will host visitors from the Association of Sisterhood in Kenya, fostering further collaboration.Safeguarding remains a top priority. Mr. Joseph Kuya, from the Safeguarding Desk, announced a refresher training session for all staff next week to reinforce policies and best practices.Finally, Madam Lenah from the Education Department provided an update on the midterm break and highlighted the urgent need for additional desks in classrooms due to the rising student population.

As we move forward, the 25-Year Jubilee Celebration serves as an opportunity to honor the past, celebrate the present, and look to the future with renewed hope. With dedication and collaboration, We Are Ruben!
