ERFA's 2024 Immersion: Into The Heart
On the 9th and 10th of September 2024, a group of nine Australian educators, led by Ann Rebgetz, ERFA board member and Principal of St James College, Brisbane, toured Ruben Centre in Mukuru kwa Ruben. She was joined by teachers from her institution, as well as St. Joseph’s College, Gregory Terrace, Nudgee College, and St. Pius IX. This visit provided a unique opportunity for the educators to learn about our organization’s history, transformative projects, and its profound impact on the local community.
During the two-day tour, the delegation explored several key areas of the Centre, including the Ruben Health Centre, Ruben FM, Salama Youth Hub, and the AEF Ruben Primary School. They also visited the urban farm and the Centre’s digitized library. Each project plays a vital role in enhancing the lives of Mukuru kwa Ruben residents, from healthcare and education to youth development and digital literacy.
One of the tour's highlights was a captivating performance by the primary school orchestra and gymnasts. The teachers also participated in a lively dance class with the students, fostering a heartwarming exchange between the visitors and the children. The group concluded their tour at the Human Development and Skills Training Program, also known as the Theresa D’Orsa Vocational Training Centre, which offers soft skills to empower local community members with valuable livelihood opportunities.
A special moment occurred when Ann Rebgetz was honored for her immense contributions to Ruben Centre, particularly for her role in funding the renovation of the AEF Ruben Primary School’s assembly grounds. As a token of gratitude, she was presented with a live orchestra performance, a painted portrait, and other meaningful tokens of appreciation—a heartfelt acknowledgment of her ongoing support for the Centre and its mission.
The visit left the educators deeply inspired by Ruben Centre's integrated approach to community development and the lasting positive impact it brings to Mukuru kwa Ruben residents. The need for more institutions from Australia to support Ruben Centre, through ERFA, cannot be understated. The Centre operates on an annual budget of AUD 1.4 million, and this year is facing a 19.1% funding gap. We hope that more immersions like this year’s “Into The Heart” will inspire increased support for our institution.
